Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting or circumcision, is a harmful practice involving the partial  or total removal of external female genitalia for cultural reasons.  FGM is a violation of human rights and can lead to serious health complications. Cosmetic gynaecology may be used in some cases to address certain aesthetic or functional concerns resulting from FGM, but it’s important to note that the primary focus should be on the overall health and well-being of the affected individuals.

Reconstructive Surgery:

Reconstructive gynaecological surgery, also known as genital reconstruction or female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) reconstructive surgery, aims to restore the anatomy and function of the external genitalia that may have been altered or damaged due to FGM. This may involve reconstructing the labia, clitoral hood, or other affected structures.

Clitoral Reconstruction:

In cases where the clitoris has been affected by FGM, clitoral reconstruction may be performed to restore or reconstruct the clitoral hood and, in some cases, the clitoral glans.

Vaginal Reconstruction:

If FGM has led to narrowing or scarring of the vaginal opening, reconstructive procedures such as vaginoplasty may be considered to improve functionality and address any issues related to sexual intercourse or childbirth.

It’s important to emphasize that while cosmetic gynaecology procedures may offer some relief or improvement in the physical aspects affected by FGM, the psychological and emotional aspects also require attention. Support from mental health professionals, counseling, and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial in helping survivors of FGM cope with the physical and emotional consequences
